Governors America Corp. (GAC), is pleased to announce that the GNS Series of Digital Controllers. These products offer you the "Biggest Bang for Your Bucks".  Built on its range of engine controllers, Governors America Corp. has added a new family of genset controllers. The new GNS2000 series controllers are designed for stand-alone applications and feature additional flexibility by allowing users to customize the controller to the genset application.   Now the GNS can be used in switchgear, gensets, and other applications.

The GNS2000 series is available with or without a display, which is refer to as the “black box” version.  All of the display communications are done over four low-voltage cables, which allows for a safer and more secure system because the AC voltage wiring is kept away from the control panel.

GNS controllers are equipped with a powerful 128 x 64 back-lit graphic display with icons, symbols and bar graphs for intuitive operation, which sets, together with high functionality setting new standards in genset controls.  The controller can be locally or remotely configured using GAC’s SmartVU configuration software.  The software is provided at no additional charge and can automatically senses engine parameters via analog inputs, discrete inputs and/or the engine’s ECU via J1939 CANbus. The display offers four language options and has five security levels and a panel lock to prevent unauthorized tampering with the control system.

The GNS has three methods for sensing system voltage; auto detection, fixed voltage operation, or assigned binary inputs to indicate desired voltage.  A series of alarms and warnings are also integrated into the controller to notify the user and protect the engine and generator.  While parameters can be controlled individually, the controller is capable of shutdown during low oil pressure, low fuel level, high coolant temperature, under/over-speed, under/over-voltage, over-current, under/over frequency, sensor failure, over-crank, over-load (kW), short-circuit current, generator current unbalanced and generator voltage unbalanced.

GNS2000 units have 18 customer definable inputs and outputs and up to two built-in RS-232/485 ports with the capability for expansion.  It also allows for remote monitoring via several methods such as external or built-in moderns, cellular communication or Ethernet.

Operating temperature on the controller is -40°F to 185°F with an optional temperature range of -4°F to 185°F for less severe thermal applications.  With an IP65 rating, the GNS unit is also designed to be resistant to salt, fog, humidity, dust, dirt and chemical contaminants.

Need to know what those Engine Fault Codes are...

Governors America Corp. has introduced the JDR050 CANbus reader with a Variable Scale Gauge to allow users to read standard J1939 diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) in engines equipped with J1939 compatible engine control units (ECU). The reader displays active and stored DTC codes for up to 10 ECUs and is operational through two buttons. Because the JDR050 is a universal diagnostic code reader, its application is not limited to any particular engine manufacturer or engine size.  It is easily installed, which makes it ideal for after market prospects, and  it is extremely rugged so harsh applications are never an issue. This UNIVERSAL diagnostic code reader that will operate with any electronic engine that utilizes J1939 protocol.

It has a built in CANbus 120Ù termination resistor and requires no software for configuration. A three-line LCD display is designed to be large enough to access with heavy gloves on while construction incorporates a sealed polycarbonate case and non-fogging display. The unit is IP67 front resist and IP69K rear resist and has an operating voltage of 8 to 32 Vdc. Operating temperature is -40 to 185oF. It can display virtually any K1939 parameter in analog form for a variety of stationary applications.

Dimensions for the JDR050 are 2.75 in. long by 2.75 in. wide by 2.127 in. deep, allowing for mounting within a 2 in. opening. The reader can be battery or ignition powered, GAC said, and is installed using two 6-pin Deutsch DT compatible connectors.

The JDR100, GAC’s J1939 DUAL FUNCTION data reader, is a low-cost universal device that allows users to read standard J1939 engine parameters and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) from engines equipped with J1939 compatible Electronic Control Units (ECU). The JDR100 supports six live engine parameters (RPM, Oil Pressure, Coolant Temperature, Fuel Level, Battery Voltage, Engine Run Hours) along with J1939 stop, warning, malfunction, and protection status messages. If enabled, the JDR100 will display the text translation of the engine parameter or trouble code information.

  • CAN bus Data Logger:  This product will log all information coming across the CAN Bus and is not limited to just receiving information from the engine ECU.  It has 4GB of internal memory.  Information is exportable to a PC and historical information is maintained on a first in - first out basis once the memory capacity has been reached.  Model number is EDL500.

  • Magnetic Pickups:  The Magnetic Speed Sensor detects when ring gear teeth, or other ferrous projections, pass the tip of the sensor.  Electrical impulses are produced by the sensor’s internal coil and sent to the speed control unit.  The signal from the magnetic speed sensor, teeth per second (Hz.), is directly proportional to engine speed.  Speed sensors are available in various lengths in both U.S. and metric threads.  Wire leads, military connectors, automotive connectors or stud terminals are also available. Speed sensors covering a wide range of installation and connection options, including the MSP6732 dual output sensor, allowing two devices to reliably sense engine speed without the need to drill and tap a second hole in the flywheel housing. Over a dozen models to choose from.

Magnetic Pick-Up Installation Hints:  Magnetic Pick-Up’s should be installed at a distance of .020 to .030 from the flywheel, (rule-of-thumb is flush to flywheel and back off ¾ of a turn).  Make sure the area is clean & free from metal filings.  Never run leads next to spark plug wires or inductive loads. To reduce interference we suggest you use shielded or twisted pair wiring on power and speed sensing circuits.  Shielded wire has the effect of blocking electrical noise, while twisted pair wiring creates a canceling effect between the two wires in the circuit. For magnetic Pick-Up’s we require between 1 to 125 Volts for the speed control unit, and 2 Volt minimums for the IG controllers.

  • Actuators:  Proportional Electromagnetic Actuators position the fuel control mechanism. All incorporate a highly reliable rotary design having no sliding parts, require no maintenance and can accommodate any linkage configuration. The range includes designs that are integral to the fuel pump as well as 'remote' actuators that connect via a linkage to a throttle or stop lever.  The highly reliable rotary design of the environmentally sealed actuators has no sliding parts, require no maintenance, and can accommodate any linkage configuration. The multiple voltage feature of the ACB and ADB types offer application convenience. Exceptional response times result in superior performance.  For fail safe operation, an internal spring returns the actuator to minimum fuel when de-energized.  For fuel management applications, position feedback transducers are available within various actuator series. Fitting kits and wiring harnesses are available for almost all applications.

Actuator Installation Hints:  For engines that have mechanical governors that are variable speed type, the electric actuator linkage is attached to the fuel shut off lever.  Control engine through shut off lever.  Remove the spring from the shut off shaft. The throttle lever is locked to 10 % above the highest desired speed setting, (get it out of the way).  It usually can be used with minimal mechanical governor interference (possible instability due to the mechanical governor fighting the electronic governor).  For engines that have mechanical governors that are min-max type, the electric actuator linkage is attached to the throttle lever.  The shut off lever is placed in full fuel.

Mechanical linkage between the actuator and the fuel system must move freely but not loosely and be kept clean and dry.  Most controllers provide adjustments for engine speed and gain which once set should not require re-adjustment and will maintain the engine speed to support the rated load.

The size of the actuator will be based on the amount of work needed to move the fuel-controlling lever, when the engine is running.  You should measure the force?

2 Lbs. or less of force / 120 Series
1 Lbs. to 4 Lbs. of force / 225 Series
Maximum of 12 Lb. of force / ACB2001

  • Speed Controllers:  Speed controllers are designed and manufactured in various configurations to meet application requirements using the latest analogue and digital control technologies. Reverse battery polarity protection and fail safe protection in the event of loss of speed sensor signal or battery supply is incorporated into every GAC speed control unit.  A wide variety of application needs can be satisfied with GAC's constant or variable speed governing in isochronous or droop operation.  All circuit boards are hard potted or conformally coated to be vibration and moisture resistant. Accurately control engine speed by comparing the measured speed from the Magnetic Pickup to an internal reference and adjusting the current supplied to the Actuator accordingly. A comprehensive range of engine speed controllers to meet any application from basic isochronous operation through multifunction controllers incorporating switchable isochronous/droop operation, low smoke startup and speed switch relay contacts, to advanced microprocessor based digital controllers. All GAC speed control units have a PWM actuator output signal.

  • Speed Detection Switches:  One, two or three element independent speed switches for reliable engine over-speed protection and starter disconnection. Governors America Corp. speed switches sense engine speed from a magnetic pickup and activate an internal relay to provide output for crank termination, intermediate speed monitoring or over-speed protection.

  • Load Sharing Modules:  These load sharing modules allow for kilowatt electrical load to be proportionally shared between two or more generator sets while the system frequency is held constant. An internal load anticipation circuit maximizes performance in single or parallel operation.

  • Automatic Synchronizers / Voltage Matching:   The synchronizers provide smooth, fast, automatic paralleling of generators at an economical cost. As well as synchronizing the engine frequency and phase angle using the SYC6714, the alternator voltage can also be automatically matched using the VMA100.

  • Fuel & Ignition Management Systems:    GAC offers an advanced gaseous fueled engine management system (FIMS) with exhaust emissions control technologies to meet the tough, standards sanctioned in the United States and the rest of the World.  Their total systems approach results in a cost effective solution that offers the greatest potential for improvements in engine efficiency and exhaust emissions. Engine performance and emissions are optimized using closed loop monitoring of engine sensors to achieve exact air/fuel ratio control.

  • Locomotive Engine Controls:   This product provides both Variable and Eight Notch Speed Control functions.  For diesel electric applications, a complete speed and excitation control is available.  Smooth speed and load changes are achieved with built-in speed ramping function.  Additional functions such as wheel slip, auto reset and speed switches are included.
